An escalating trade war between the US and China threatens the sustainability of this year’s strong demand growth. Global demand growth in the third quarter is forecast at 2.1mn b/d. But the standofs between the US and other trading blocs threaten to undermine this growth. The US decision to impose tarifs on its major trading partners has afected only a small share of global trade until now, the IMF says in the July up- date to its World Economic Outlook (WEO). But a further escalation of the trade disputes and a concomitant decline in business confdence could push the annual growth rate 0.5 percentage points lower by 2020, it says.
