North China’s Henan and Hebei provinces plan to cut coal consumption this year in a bid to combat air pollution. The move appears more ambitious than guidelines set in the national strategy to limit coal use. Henan plans to reduce coal consumption by 5pc from a year earlier to 210mn t in 2019. To achieve the planned cut the province will limit the increase in coal-fired power and reduce the use of coal in other industries. The provincial government has laid out individual targets for every city and will closely watch implementation of the planned reductions.
