European prices recover as arb windows close

European physical coal prices switched from five weeks of losses to settle higher this week, as increasingly tight margins for Russian, US and Colombian suppliers offered support. Argus’ weekly cif Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) assessment rose by $5.59/t on the week to $60.22/t. Activity focused on June 2019 delivery, with the first two assessment-relevant deals — $62/t on 10 April and $60.75/t on 11 April. This was up from bids and offers in the mid-tohigh $50s/t last week and helped to lift the daily index to as high as $61.80/t on 10 April.
