Coal sales by Shenhua Energy, the listed arm of China's largest state-controlled coal producer and power utility China Energy Investment (CEI), retreated last month from a multi-year high in December. Shenhua Energy's total coal sales, including coal it produced and coal it bought to sell, were 26mn t in January, down by 25.9pc from 35.1mn t a year earlier. The firm did not give a sales breakdown of coal it produced and coal it bought to sell. Sales were also down by 40pc from December’s 33-month high of 43.8mn t, spurred by soaring demand that month and tough import restrictions.
