What's clinically relevant and new in pediatric and adolescent gynecology?

For the last 9 years, it has been my pleasure to edit the section on Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology for Current Opinion in Obstetrics and Gynecology. This has been an opportunity to highlight the medical conditions that affect girls and adolescents, in an effort to emphasize that there are some unique gynecologic conditions that occur in this age group, and to make the point that some of the conditions that are also common in adult women can present and manifest in different ways in this age group. The many psychological, social, cultural, and biological aspects of growth and development mean that the adolescent age group is special -sometimes challenging, but often gratifying to care for. These factors must be considered in the management of most gynecologic conditions, and may present unique challenges for individual clinicians caring for individual girls. As every parent of a teenager knows, there is seldom a dull moment with adolescents, and even the dull moments are changeable.
