Steel scrap and iron ore consumption to grow in Egypt in next few years

Demand for steel scrap and iron ore will strengthen next year in line with local steelmakers expanding capacity utilization. Egyptian Steel Group is into a large-scale project involving launch of two electric steelmaking complexes 850,000 tpy each in 2015 and 2016. The producer will purchase raw materials for the first unit in spring. El-Marakby plans to commission a similar complex (350,000 tpy) in late 2015. Steel scrap usage will increase by approximately 2.2- 2.5 million tpy in Egypt, most of which (80-90%) will be imported.
