The polypropylene-graft-cardanol was pre-pared by reactive extrusion, which is solvent-free meltprocess, continuous processing, and controllable over resi-dence time. The effect of monomer and initiator concen-tration on grafting ratio, grafting efficiency, and melt flowindex (MFI) was also studied. The yield was quantifiedby UV—vis spectrometer. The chemical structure wasinvestigated by infrared spectroscopy and gel ratio. Apossible mechanism was supposed. The particular struc-ture of cardanol can retain the MFI value of matrix resinsand prevent polypropylene (PP) from being decomposed.The grafting ratio could be easily obtained from an exper-imental formula deduced from the linearity relationshipbetween grafting ratio and MFI. The effect of cardanolgrafted onto PP on the compatibility of PP and bamboopowder was studied by contact angle measurements,scanning electron microscopy, and tensile properties test.
