With a view to resynthesising Brassica juncea, reciprocal crosses were made between B. nigra accessions IC247, IB257 and Sangam and B. campestris (yellow sarson, brown sarson and toria). Pre- and post-fertilization barriers were identified on the basis of pollen germination, pollen tube growth and pollen entry into ovules. Bud pollination was found to be more effective than stump pollination or the use of irradiated mentor pollen in overcoming pre-fertilization barriers. In crosses showing post-fertilization barriers, globular embryos were observed about 10 days after pollination. Pollinated pistils were cultured 5-10 days after pollination. Hybrids were produced after sequential ovary-ovule culture in reciprocal crosses involving yellow sarson and IB257. Optimum conditions for multiplication of these hybrids are outlined.
