While he was in Paris, studying at the Academie Julian, he had the opportunity to see the work of the French painter Paul Cezanne, whose influence can be seen in Kroll's Still Life With Lemon Tree (cover). This painting has stylistic similarities to Cezanne's Still Life With Apples (JAMA cover, August 27, 2003), which was painted in 1893-1894. Both compositions consist of a bottle, some pots, and a dish of fruit, objects that were deliberately chosen by the painters to emphasize the geometry of natural forms. In Cezanne's painting, the neck of the bottle has the shape of a cone, the pots are cylinders, and the apples are spheres. Kroll's painting also contains cones (the points of the lemons and pears), cylinders (the vase, pot, and bananas), and spheres (the apples and the orange). Both paintings rely on more than one source of illumination to model the contours of the objects; in the Kroll painting, for example, there are highlights on the front of the chipped blue vase and also behind it on the table.
