Flint Hills Resources (FHR) and Phillips 66 (PSX) are the latest two US refiners to contemplate new projects at their respective plants, showing that US facilities still have room for upgrades, expansions, and improvements. FHR will invest $300MM at its 339K-b/d Rosemount, MN (US) plant on two separate projects. The firm said $150MM will be allocated to build a turbine at the plant that will run on natural gas to generate electricity. The waste heat produced by the turbine will be captured and used to produce steam that can power other parts of the refinery, therefore improving the overall energy efficiency of the plant. The new turbine is expected to supply half of the power needs of the refinery once it is online.
