Organ donation in Belgium 2009: 20% of donation after cardiocirculatory death.

In this issue of Transplantation Proceedings, the Belgian Transplantation Society (BTS) publishes the Proceedings of a selection of the studies presented at the 17th annual BTS meeting that was held on March 18, 2010 in Brussels, Belgium. During this meeting 24 (72%) out of 33 submitted abstracts were orally presented. In addition to the scientific program, the BTS annual meeting allowed the review of the donation trends from 1993 to 2009. In 2009, 545 potential deceased organ donors were referred to the different Belgian procurement and transplantation centres, the highest number ever (51.9 potential donors pmp). Only 50% of these became effective organ donors, resulting in 276 effective deceased organ donors (26.2 organ donors pmp) with a mean age of 48 years (range: 8 months-86 years). Medical contraindications constituted the major reason for non-procurement with an increasing trend compared to the previous years. Notwithstanding the current opting out legislation system (since 1986), family refusal accounted for 15% of cases.
