Malaria is transmitted via gametocyte-infected erythrocytes (GlEs) that are taken up when a mosquito bites. Immature, rigid GlEs are sequestered in the bone marrow; upon release into the peripheral blood they show increased deformability, which allows them to pass through the spleen.
