A number of crucial events captured the cotton market's attention as the 1997/98 marketing season came to a close and the new season began. Among these were Asia's economic situation, China's changing cotton policies, and adverse weather occurring throughout much of the U.S. Cotton Belt. All of these could foreshadow an adverse competitive situation for U.S. producers in the months ahead.
