VETERINARY pharmacies that dispense human medicines for animal use will be required to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council, the GPhC has confirmed. This represents a change from proposals set out in the GPhC's premises consultation, which sparked fears that veterinary-only pharmacies could be stripped of their pharmacy status and forced to register as veterinary practices in order to continue operating. A spokeswoman for the GPhC said it has now confirmed that if a service model includes the supply of pharmacy medicines and pre-scription-only medicines against prescriptions written by a veterinary practitioner for treatment of an animal, the veterinary pharmacy is eligible and legally required to register with the GPhC as a pharmacy.
