THE Government's ￡7bn plan to introduce an electronic shared patient care record system has failed and has been a waste of money, according to a damning report by the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee.Ministers should now consider abandoning the initiative, which is the central plank of the ￡11.46bn National Programme for IT in the NHS, the report recommends. The chairman of the committee, Labour MP Margaret Hodge, said: "The Department [of Health] has been unable to demonstrate what benefits have been delivered from the ￡2.7bn spent on the project so far."
