We need to think more positively

I fully empathise with Elaine Ferguson's letter describing the employment situation of pharmacists (PJ, 11 February 2012, pl71). As an aspiring sixth former applying to university in the autumn of 1990,1 also subscribed to the view that pharmacy was a safe bet, leading to guaranteed employment, instant respect and dare I say it, an "easy life". Dr Ferguson highlights an illogical inconsistency in her letter, which perhaps we can build on. It appears that, on one hand, we have a situation where pharmacists are subjected to excessive workload while, on the other, we fear that the employment market is becoming saturated with an increasing number of pharmacy graduates. This does not make sense.
