Improve use of four drugs to avert ADE admissions

IMPROVED management of antithrombotic and antidiabetic drugs has the potential to reduce hospital admissions for adverse drug events (ADEs) in older adults, according to the authors of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2011;365:2002). Approximately two-thirds of hospital admissions for ADEs (95 per cent confidence interval 60.0-74.1) were attributed to four drugs or drug types - warfarin (33.3 per cent), insulins (13.9 per cent), oral antiplatelet agents (13.3 per cent) and oral hypoglycaemic agents (10,7 per cent).
