NHS to save up to ?20bn by 2014, Budget confirms

The NHS will deliver efficiency savings of ?15-20bn by 2013-14, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling confirmed in his 2010 Budget speech. Specifically, ?2.7bn will be saved by transforming the care of patients with long-term conditions, through best practice in care planning and case management, empowering patients to self-care and integrating community services. A further ?1.5bn will be saved through more effective commissioning by reducing unnecessary referrals and prescriptions.
