I am writing in response to the Article by Jane Buckham on unlicensed medicines ("specials") (PJ, 24 April 2010, p399). She states correctly that manufacturers of unlicensed medicines ("specials") are not allowed to inform clinicians and pharmacists of the availability of their products. Medicines legislation currendy prohibits promotion by manufacturers or distributors of unlicensed medicines via advertisements, catalogues, price lists and circulars. Medicines and Health products Regulatory Agency guidance advises that a manufacturer, importer or wholesale distributor of "specials" may advertise the service it provides but not particular "specials".They may, however, respond to bona fide requests from health professionals for price lists and information on specific products.
