Changes to doctors' prescribing status

Changes affecting the prescribing rights of doctors will come into force as a result of The Medical Act 1983 (Amendment) Order 2002 on 16 November 2009.The General Medical Council (GMC) is introducing a licence to practise for doctors, in addition to the requirement for them to be registered with the GMC. From this date, in order to practise medicine in the UK and carry out the activities that GMC-registered doctors can currently undertake, doctors will be required by law both to be registered with the GMC and to hold a licence to practise.
