Tacrolimus manufacturer Astellas has developed a three-step checklist for pharmacists to use when dispensing the drug. The move aims to help reduce the number of tacrolimus prescribing and dispensing errors that result in patients being switched between the available formulations, which are non-interchangeable.Pharmacists are encouraged to check prescriptions clearly specify the formulation or brand and dosing frequency. If this is not clear, they should call the patient's GP or transplantation unit pharmacist to clarify.
