Vicks may cause respiratory distress, study suggests

Vicks Vaporub (WR) may cause respiratory distress, in children, a recent study suggests. Using an animal model of the human airway, investigators in the US found that, in excised tracheas,WR increased mucin secretion by 59 per cent (P=0.0012) and decreased mean ciliary beat frequency by 36 per cent (P=0.042) compared with the effects of the control substance, K-Y jelly (Chest 2009;135:143).
