The model list of essential drugs compiled by the World Health Organization represents a core list of drugs that describe the minimum medicines required by any healthcare system and a complementary list where more specialist facilities are available for their appropriate use. The 2008 formulary therefore describes the use of these essential drugs, although the core list is currently available for 2009.
