The fact that the abolition of prescription charges in Wales has not led to a great difference in the.number of prescriptions dispensed per person in England and Wales(PJ,31 January 2009,p98)raises the question of why we continue with our unfair system in England.It is generally accepted that the system for prescription charges has many flaws.It is right that patients with underactive thyroid glands receive free thyroxine but why are they exempt from all charges? People with asthma,however,having a"reversible"condition,may have to pay for countless inhalers and courses of steroids and antibiotics.
