Exemption rules that allow pharmacists to trade in small amounts of medicines will not be abolished, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has said.In a document outlining the outcomes of its consultation on measures to strengthen the UK medicines supply chain, the MHRA states that "there is no intention to abolish the Section 10(7) exemption", as stated in the Medicines Act 1968. Instead, the MHRA has established a group, led by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, that will research how pharmacists are currently using the exemption and how its use could be better defined. The MHRA adds that any proposals made in this area should not remove important flexibilities that will impact on the local availability of medicines.
