NHS flu vaccination service on the cards in Scotland

Community pharmacies in Scotland are to be evaluated as sites to provide influenza vaccination, with pilots set up before the 2009-10 flu season. This is one of the recommendations made in a report published by the Scottish Government on 16 September. The report recommends that to increase uptake of vaccination, community pharmacy pilots should be established primarily to target people aged under 65 years who are at risk from flu. This group was identified as having a poor uptake of vaccination. An evaluation of the pilot should be completed before the 2010-11 flu season so a decision can be taken on whether or not to introduce an NHS-funded pharmacy flu vaccination service.
