摘要

During 2012/13 cotton growers in Sub-Saharan Africa were frustrated by low market prices. In Tanzania, growers had to grapple with a 42% price drop to $0.42/kg of seed cotton. This was a bitter pill for farmers and the government. Resource-poor countries, in collaboration with the private sector, are advised to implement the following measures: Institute an appropriate way to supply inputs and embrace technology to increase productivity; Establish a working extension service network to impart good agricultural practice to growers; Improve cotton quality to maximize price; Explore new markets, including direct sale to textile mills.
