I am recovering from illness. Severe illness causes layer upon layer of hurt: so that, for each apparent recovery you make, a fresh memory arises of how things once were, and are not. I used to walk like that...I remember when I could eat food straight out of the fridge...Didn't I once feel alive at this time of day? Still, the recovery happens: and I glimpse a new world not quite like stout Cortez, but more like an apeman who, to his wistful regret, can no longer walk on his hands.
