Walk around busy shopping centres at this time of year and large adverts encouraging shoppers to buy presents are readily apparent. Undoubtedly, for those who celebrate it, Christmas is a time when people like to spend money on the people they love. But this time of year is also a good moment to step outside the close-knit circle of family and friends and look at charitable giving farther afield. Unfortunately, two recent UK surveys that examine charitable giving and social attitudes put a dampener on the philanthropic spirit.
