No human being is fortunate enough to live a life free of any pain, but, thankfully for most, such experiences are not severe. For many people, however, pain is enduring, debilitating, and devastating and arises after an operation, injury, or onset of disease. WHO estimates that 20% of individuals worldwide live with some degree of chronic pain. In the USA alone, pain is cited as the most common reason for accessing the healthcare system. And, as Human Rights Watch note in a new report, millions of people with life-threatening illnesses suffer unnecessarily from severe pain because they lack access to palliative care.
