A research institute, funded by the European Union (EU), has been set up in the Czech Republic's Plzen region to investigate why the area has one of the highest rates of colon and kidney cancers in the world.Researchers say that they suspect environmental factors play a part in the high incidence rates, but they admit that, at the moment, the exact causes are unknown. "The Plzen area is a world hotspot forthese forms of cancer and we want to try and find out why", Ladislav Dusek, who will be working at the new centre, tells The Lancet.
