Few doctors are unaware of the notorious cases of torture or degrading treatment by members of their profession, such as those that came to light during the Nuremberg trial of Nazi physicians (1946-47). More recently, the involvement of physicians in interrogations at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility has received high-profile coverage and condemnation. But the ill-treatment of individuals does not only occur in conflict situations or in prisons, in fact, doctors' complicity in torture and cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment is commonplace in health-care settings in several nations, according to the 2010 World Report by Human Rights Watch (HRW), which has the abuse of patients as one of its main themes.
