Improving aid for maternal, newborn, and child health.

In The Lancet today, Catherine Pitt and colleagues1 report on trends in official development assistance (ODA) for maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), from 2003 to 2008 as part of the Countdown to 2015 initiative. Their excellent paper presents a window of opportunity to examine how aid for MNCH can be improved. I highlight three findings that require further consideration.First, Pitt and colleagues find that ODA for MNCH activities increased in real terms by 105% for all developing countries and 120% for the 68 Countdown countries between 2003 and 2008.
