It read like a bad horror story. Guatemalan prisoners were allowed to sleep with prostitutes infected, sometimes purposely, with venereal disease. When that did not result in adequate disease transmission, inoculums were applied to abraded patches of skin on arms, faces, and even the penises of individuals who now included patients in the national asylum. Or worse, the pathogens were injected into their spines or inserted in their urethras. Subjects were paid in cigarettes, one for clinical observation, and a whole pack for more elaborate tests. Some patients made several trips to physicians in the hopes of receiving blood tests, spinal taps or examinations "just to augment their supply of tobacco", according to study documents. Treatment was given to those who tested positive, but documentation does not confirm whether alI patients were cured.
