While the south of Sri Lanka ground to a halt for a national holiday to celebrate a major Buddhist festival last week, the country's 26-year conflict in the north carried on relentless, brutally claiming more innocent lives. Hundreds of civilians, including more than 100 children, were killed by heavy artillery fire over a 2-day period in what the UN has described as a "bloodbath".
