An inquiry into the police investigation of the 1993 murder of British black teenager, Stephen Lawrence, prompted an important change in UK legislation on race relations, with implications for the country's National Health Service (NHS). In his report on the case, Sir William MacPherson noted that the police force was "institutionally racist", which led to the question of whether the state of race equality in UK public bodies was adequate. In an effort to address race inequality, the UK Government passed the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, which unlike the 1976 Race Relations Act, would extend to all public bodies including hospitals, police forces, prisons, schools, and universities, as well as the private sector.
