摘要

The global financial crisis might have dimmed the lustre of India's economic growth story but it has also had one positive outcome: the country's mental health issues have been brought into the spotlight. Suicides generally increase during times of economic troubles, experts say, and Asians may be particularly susceptible as the region has among the world's highest suicide rates, a recent Reuters report pointed out. The suicide rate in South Korea, for example, nearly doubled during the Asian financial crisis 10 years ago, with experts blaming the increase on stress caused by job and income losses. Debt and distress has also driven tens of thousands of Indian farmers to commit suicide in the past two decades.
