Around a third of people who survive after stroke remain reliant on others for their care. For both patients and their families, rehabilitation services are crucial to reduce disability and dependency after stroke. Stroke rehabilitation has been criticised for not being rooted in science. However, over the past 10 years an evidence base for rehabilitation has been building and interest in stroke recovery is being revitalised. New potential therapies are under investigation and include the use of virtual reality to simulate real-life learning and robotic devices to increase the amount and intensity of limb exercise.
