CHINA (MAINLAND) CONSUMPTION DOWN IN 1994/95

Cotton yarn production in China (Mainland) fell from 3.3 million tons during August through March 1993/94 to 2.9 million tons during the same period in 1994/95. The yarn data suggest that mill use will fall about 300,000 tons this season and bring total cotton use down to 4.4 million tons, the same level as during the last period of scarcity in China (Mainland) between 1988/89 and 1991/92. Thus, there has been no growth in cotton use since 1986/87. The reduction in yarn output also indicates that there is little difference between production and consumption this season in China (Mainland), making the rise in imports to a near-record level even more difficult for non-Chinese to understand. However, it is important to note that the difference betweenprocurement (3 million tons) and mill use (3.8 million tons) is about equal to net imports this season.
