The first signs of revival in stainless consumption during the last two weeks of August in Italy failed to gather pace through September butfor Western Europe as a whole, it was largely a pleasing month for stainless steel producers. As in August, however, the purchasing activity was largely concentrated towards the end of the month when distributors and other users became fully aware that alloy surcharges for the austenitic stainless steels such as 1.4301 (304) were due to rise by over 90 euros/tonne (125 US dollars/tonne) in October.
