Editorial Comment: The epidemic of obesity and its concomitant effects on various disease processes have been well described. Within urology a number of conditions have been associated with obesity, including late onset hypogonadism, overactive bladder and prostatic enlargement. Associated with obesity are components of the metabolic syndrome, most notably diabetes. It has been estimated that the global incidence of diabetes will increase from about 170 million in 2000 to 366 million by the year 2030, most of which will be seen in Asian countries. More recently it has been demonstrated that there is an increased risk of bladder cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes.
