COPING with publication ethics.

As Editor of The Journal of Urology~R I am gratified and impressed with the high integrity of our authors and reviewers. Accusations of redundant publication, fabricated data, undisclosed competing interests, plagiarism and unethical research or behavior are rare among our colleagues. Yet such events do occur. For example estimates of dual publication and plagiarism are as high as 5%. Schein and Paladugu reported that 3% of articles published in top ranked surgical journals were identical and 7% nearly identical.However, when author or reviewer misconduct occurs, what course of action does this journal take and what guidelines or resources exist to facilitate complex decision making that can ruin someone's academic career?
