Restart of La Oroya lead smelter ruled out

Our insight into the chances of La Oroya restarting that we outlined in last month's Monitor appears to have been correct. We had understood that, although there were media reports of efforts to restart the smelter in August, there was actually little chance of operations recommencing by the end of the year. That was not to say that there was no will to seek a restart, but the obstacles were complex and the competing interests of the parties involved were always going to be difficult to overcome.
