Focus: IMO MARPOL regulations

The International Zinc Association (IZA) held a workshop at its annual conference in late February that aimed to discuss the obligations of those shipping zinc concentrates under the International Marine Organisation (IMO) regulations. A new Annex V regulation came into effect on 1st January 2013 and this stipulates that cargo residues of solid bulk cargoes and the associated wash water from cleaning the ship holds are categorised as “garbage” and that discharge of all types of “garbage” into the sea is prohibited unless explicitly permitted.
