Government pledges ￡2bn for Hinkley Point C

THE UK government has pledged a ￡2bn (US$3bn) guarantee to back EDF's planned new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. Chancellor George Osborne announced the deal whilst on a business tour of China, and says that the Treasury money will help lead to a final investment decision by the companies building the plant - EDF and its Chinese partners China General Nuclear Corporation and China National Nuclear Corporation. The deal is also expected to boost collaboration between the UK and China in the construction of nuclear power stations.
