Diageo to invest ￡1bn in Scotch whisky

DRINKS giant Diageo is spending ￡lbn (US$1.55bn) on expanding its Scotch whisky operations in Scotland, to meet growing global demand. In the past five years, demand for Diageo's Scotch brands, which include Johnnie Walker, J&B and Buchanan's, has risen by 50%. This is largely driven by demand from emerging markets in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Over the next five years, Diageo will build at least one major new malt whisky distillery, with a second to follow if growth continues at expected levels, and will expand several existing distilleries. The company will also develop new warehousing facilities for the increased production.
