OFFICE workers of the future could one day shred their shredders and recycle the recycling bin itself thanks to new research from the UK's University of Cambridge which shows that lasers can remove ink from printed paper. The team imagines developing a handheld 'imprinting' device for use in offices that would eradicate four steps from the paper production cycle: forestry, pulping, paper making, and disposal by incineration or landfill. Skipping these four steps would result in a 95% reduction in paper production emissions, rather than the 76% saved by recycling, the researchers say.
