LED headlights have become de rigeur in premium SUVs but, as the technology has become more prevalent, so have unexpected consequences. As Audi releases its second generation Q7 it is demonstrating a next-generation headlight that diffuses solar radiation. Sunlight radiated into the multiple LED/HID lenses creates localised increases in thermal loadings in excess of 235CC. This can cause heat distortion and out-gassing of functional and aesthetic components.
