Panamax freight rates in Pacific gain on Chinese appetite for imported coal

Singapore—Panamax coal freight rates in the Pacific were well supported Tuesday as China continued to nurse a “healthy” appetite for imported coal even as Indian charterers remained on the sidelines, shying away from imported cargoes. Platts assessed Panamax coal freight rates from South Africa’s Richards Bay coal terminal to Paradip port on India’s east coast at $18.40/mt and to Mundra on the west coast of India at $17.90/mt Wednesday, each up 10 cents from Tuesday.
