Northwest European polystyrene contract values were sideways from the previous week, settling at Eur1,515/ mt FD NWE for general purpose grade and Eur1,595/ mt FD NWE for high impact grade product. Upstream in feedstocks, NWE styrene monomer spot prices slumped $39/mt from the previous week to $1,518/mt FOB ARA, and maintained a bearish outlook going into October. Demand had yet to emerge from the doldrums of an August that was one of the poorest months in terms of sales for the market, sources said. Converters in the food and beverage packaging and building and construction industries reported a year-todate decline in sales volumes of around 5-10%, and as such had lowered their own operating rates by the same extent to match those levels.
